Skin dryness occurs when the water content of the stratum corneum is lower than normal. This can result in a thickening of the stratum corneum, which happens when cell renewal is too fast (< 28 days), preventing the natural process of cell elimination from keeping pace. Aging, innate sensitivity, medication, hormonal changes and external factors (cold, dry weather, excessive cleansing, etc.) can aggravate or even trigger it. As a result, the skin becomes rough, feels tight and starts flaking. Scales build up on the surface, giving the skin a cracked, leathery appearance.
